Internet search engines (revision 6/24/06)

http://ask.com is a well-regarded alternative (or supplement) to http://www.google.com/. The ask.com search engine seems especially well-suited to conceptual ("natural language") questions.  Ask.com has its roots in a superseded technology named "Ask Jeeves."   http://www.yahoo.com/  is another significant search engine.

“Google Answers” is a new research service offered at the Google web site.  Submit your question to a panel of contracted human researchers and offer to pay a predetermined amount for an answer ($2.00 to $200.00.)  Others who are registered at the “Google Answer” site can comment on your question, but you don’t pay for that.

Electronic reference areas

Looksmart is like a general reference area in a public library.  It is divided into three areas:

The "directory" page contains hand-picked websites in a variety of categories.  The category "reference and education," for example, enables you to access many useful general resources, such as almanacs, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and thesauri.

At Looksmart's article page, you can search 2.8 million articles from over 500 publications.

Looksmart also has a web search tool covering 1.2 billion web pages.  I am unsure how it differs from other search engines.
