Internet search engines (revision 6/24/06)
http://ask.com is a well-regarded alternative (or supplement) to http://www.google.com/. The ask.com search engine seems especially well-suited to conceptual ("natural language") questions. Ask.com has its roots in a superseded technology named "Ask Jeeves." http://www.yahoo.com/ is another significant search engine.

Filtered searches, a reverse phonebook, language translation, math calculation, and many more useful - but little known - Google features are available in an easy-to-use format. http://www.soople.com/index.php
“Google Answers” is a new research service offered at the Google web site. Submit your question to a panel of contracted human researchers and offer to pay a predetermined amount for an answer ($2.00 to $200.00.) Others who are registered at the “Google Answer” site can comment on your question, but you don’t pay for that. http://answers.google.com/answers/
Electronic reference areas Looksmart is like a general reference area in a public library. It is divided into three areas: The "directory" page contains hand-picked websites in a variety of categories. The category "reference and education," for example, enables you to access many useful general resources, such as almanacs, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and thesauri. http://search.looksmart.com/p/home?tb=dir
At Looksmart's article page, you can search 2.8 million articles from over 500 publications. http://articles.findarticles.com/p/home?tb=art
Looksmart also has a web search tool covering 1.2 billion web pages. I am unsure how it differs from other search engines. http://search.looksmart.com/?pi=us&tb=web
